7 mistakes that burn your Google Ads budget with nothing to show for it

The most common thing we hear from business owners isn't "the campaign doesn't work." It's running, showing impressions, getting clicks, the stats look alive. The problem is the budget runs out by month's end and the phone hasn't rung any more than before.

Here are seven mistakes we see in almost every account we take over, ranked from most expensive to most subtle.

1. Broad match with no negative keywords

Leave your keywords on broad match and Google decides for itself which searches count as close enough. Advertise a dental practice and your ad happily shows up for "how to fix a toothache at home" — people click, you pay, nobody books.

2. Sending traffic to the homepage

Someone searches "PVC window installation price" and lands on a page that says "Welcome, we're a family business with tradition" — now they have to go hunting for the one thing they came for. Most won't bother.

3. Measuring clicks instead of conversions

An account with no conversion tracking set up is an account where nobody actually knows what's working. Without it you optimize toward cheap clicks, and a cheap click and a valuable click are often opposite things.

4. One campaign for every service

Keep "emergency callout" and "teeth whitening" in the same campaign and Google spreads the budget on its own, usually toward whatever gets more clicks, not whatever brings more revenue.

5. Ignoring mobile users

Most local searches in Serbia happen on a phone. Open your own site on a phone over mobile data, not home wifi, and count how many seconds you wait.

6. Killing campaigns too early

A campaign needs two to four weeks of stable budget to get past the learning phase. Pausing after seven days and restarting resets that clock.

7. No one answering the lead

A campaign brings in a lead at 9pm, it sits in the inbox until noon the next day, and by then that person has already booked with someone who called back in ten minutes.

How to check your own account

  • Open the search terms report for the last 30 days and read it line by line
  • Check that at least one conversion is set up and actually recording data
  • Open every ad's landing page on your phone
  • Compare the number of leads to the number of conversions logged in the account; if they don't match, tracking is broken
