Why a competitor with a worse product still gets more customers
The restaurant at the end of the street has better food, and the parking outside is empty. Two blocks over, an average restaurant has a line at the door every evening.
Visibility compounds, quality is discovered one person at a time
Quality only reaches people who've already tried it. Visibility reaches thousands of people who never have, every time they see you, and that adds up.
Why this happens
A customer making a choice does not compare every option on the market. They compare the options they can remember. If they do not think of you at the moment they need you, your quality never enters that decision at all: it did not lose, it was never on the list.
A better product only moves the decision once it is on that list. Until then it is invisible, and from the customer side invisible and bad look identical.
What this means for you
This is not an argument for outspending your competition. It is an argument for being present where the decision is made, often enough to be remembered:
- How often one person sees you matters more than how many people see you once
- One message repeated works better than five different ones rotating
- Being there at the moment of search is worth more than being there at the moment of boredom
- Quality does its work after first contact: it keeps people, it does not bring them
